About

The Psychology of Women and Equalities Section (POWES) was set up as a subsection of the British Psychological Society in 1988 to:

  • Bring together everyone with an interest in the Psychology of Women
  • Provide a forum for the Psychology of Women in research, teaching, and professional practice
  • Increase awareness and action around gender and inequality issues within the British Psychological Society, Psychology profession, and the teaching of Psychology.

POWES is open to all members of the BPS. The majority of members are women who work in the various areas within psychology: clinical, educational, social, developmental, health, occupational, and lesbian & gay psychology.

We produce up to two periodicals a year for our members, titled Psychology of Women Equalities Review (POWER). Current and past issues of POWER are now available to purchase/download via the BPS shop in PDF format.

If you do not wish to join the British Psychological Society or Section, you can take out an individual or institutional subscription to POWER by contacting the Commercial Sales Team on 0116 252 9551 or sales@bps.org.uk

Please note as of Dec 2017 POWS has had a name change to POWES (Psychology of Women and Equalities Section). Similarly the associated journal was formerly called POWSR.

Views expressed on blog posts are those of the author, and do not necessarily represent the views of the section or the BPS.
